A dull ache along the inside of the shin. It settles when you rest, then it's back a few weeks into the next build-up, and this time it's there from the first mile.
This free plan is what I'd give a runner in that spot. Five pages, in the order you need them:
- Is it really shin splints? How to tell it apart from a stress fracture or compartment syndrome, and why that changes everything.
- Should you stop running? What your shin is telling you, my two-week rule, and how to get to a race if one is close.
- The rehab, in order. The lower-leg strength work, the 12-hop test that tells you when you're ready, and the stride changes that take load off the bone.
